The Midsummer Marriage

by Michael Tippett

A quest opera that sends two young couples in search of enlightenment into a mythic world of ritual dance and the collective unconscious, The Midsummer Marriage is based on sources as diverse as The Magic Flute, Jungian psychology, and The Waste Land. Musically, it is lyrical and lush, and the ensemble cast includes award-winning young soprano Joélle Harvey as Jenifer; tenor Peter Tantsits as Mark; baritone Andrew Schroeder as King Fisher (a figure from Grail legend, recast as a 20th century industrialist); and mezzo-soprano Joyce Castle as Madame Sosostris, Eliot’s “famous clairvoyante.”
