Fidelio

by Beethoven

Based on a true story from France's Reign of Terror, Beethoven's only opera tells the powerful story of a woman, in disguise as a young man, who goes to work in a dismal prison to liberate her husband, a political prisoner. With highlights that include the first-act quartet, powerhouse arias for soprano and tenor, and the Prisoner's Chorus, the score fully expresses the opera's lofty themes of unwavering loyalty, freedom, and love.
